A Japanese government survey shows that businesses as a group experienced a drop in pretax profits in the last quarter although at a much slower pace than before.

The Finance Ministry says ordinary profits in the October-to-December period totaled about 18.5 trillion yen, or over 172 billion dollars.

That’s a drop of 0.7 percent year-on-year, compared to a 28.4-percent tumble in July to September.
